The National Network for Educational Renewal Endorses NCATE's Blue Ribbon Panel Report
The National Network for Educational Renewal (NNER) appreciates the work of the NCATE Blue Ribbon Panel on Clinical Preparation and Partnerships for Improved Student Learning on its latest call for strengthening the preparation of prospective teachers.
As "Transforming Teacher Education through Clinical Practice: A National Strategy to Prepare Effective Teachers" notes, the partnerships that are members of the NNER engage in simultaneously renewing schools and the education of educators. During the past 25 years we have developed the kinds of clinical practices and strong partnerships recommended in the report. We commend your attention to principles that align with the 20 postulates that describe the research-based conditions that have helped to shape our partnerships for over 20 years (http://ieiseattle.org/Publications/postulates.htm). Our partnership work is guided by our deep convictions concerning the importance of the Agenda for Education in a Democracy (AED) (http://www.nnerpartnerships.org/about/overview.html).
We encourage NCATE to consider the conditions described in the postulates, the AED, and the design principles articulated in the panel’s report as it assesses programs. We know that pursuing these well-researched tenets continues to help us create and renew high quality programs within the NNER. Teacher preparation programs throughout the nation would benefit from similarly rigorous expectations as would future teachers and the students they will serve.
