| NCATE appoints a Board of Examiners (BOE) team of three to eight persons to visit an institution every five to seven years. The team is chaired by one of the BOE members who provides the leadership in planning and conducting the visit. A state consultant representing the state agency responsible for program approval assists the team in all partnership states. The NCATE team is often joined by state BOE members who have participated in a state BOE training session. A state BOE member is appointed by the state agency to serve as the co-chair for joint state/NCATE visits. In many states, the state affiliates of the National Education Association (NEA) and the American Federation of Teachers (AFT) appoint representatives who serve as observers on the visit.
