"Since 2000, NCATE has been leading the reform movement for accountability in higher education by requiring colleges of education to produce performance based assessments to measure candidate’s proficiencies, programs, and unit operations. Regional accreditation organizations are now requiring the same rigorous value-added assessments and are asking faculty from education to be leaders at their institutions. This paradigm shift is creating a culture on college campuses towards innovation and quality improvements."

Scope of NCATE Accreditation

NCATE accredits schools, colleges, and departments of education in U.S. colleges and universities, as well as non-university entities that prepare educators for P-12 schools. The accreditation covers all educator preparation programs for the purpose of preparing and developing professional educators for work in P-12 school settings, including off-campus programs, distance learning programs, and alternate route programs. However, the accreditation does not include individual education courses that the institution offers to P-12 educators for professional development, relicensure, or other purposes.

First Annual List of NCATE Accredited Institutions July 1, 1954
This is the list of institutions NCATE first accredited in 1954 when NCATE was incorporated as a non-profit accrediting body and began functioning as an independent agency. Prior to that time, the accreditation function resided within the American Association for Colleges of Teacher Education. This is not a current list of accredited institutions, but an historical document.
